Why do coil samples have lines?

The small parallel lines visible on some lab prepared panels are known as “draw-down” lines. These lines are created by “draw down bars” that are strictly calibrated using different gauges of wire to tightly control the thickness of the coating being applied to a metal panel.

It is a common misconception that these minute parallel lines on lab prepared panels are somehow not an accurate aesthetic representation of a color.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  The only difference will be that the final Coil Coated metal strip will be perfectly smooth, (with no lines). Everything else - color, gloss, sparkle, and reflectivity – will be the same.

This is an industry accepted scientific process we use to insure our specifiers and customers will continue to receive the quality and reliability you’ve come to expect from PPG Coatings.
